Keyword research is essential for the successful internet marketer. Using the tools outlined in the previous article will allow analysis of searches and general competition for these keywords.

Previously we discussed what to look for in keywords in terms of number of searches, number of competing sites and focusing on buying keywords. Without a focus on buying keywords, it doesn’t really matter how much traffic you get to your product. You need to concentrate on the people who are looking to buy. The people who have a need for the product you are creating. Finding a niche with a group of people who have a need and are willing to pay for information regarding that need, is crucial to your success.

So what if you have researched all the niches you find interesting and your most successful keywords have thirty searches per month? Or the niche has 500,000 searches per month but is saturated with 250,000,000 web pages relating to this niche? What do you do? Throw up your hands and say, “Well, that’s it! It is all too hard. Back to my fast food job.”

If you are reading this and have read my previous articles, you should have already downloaded the proven plan for the internet marketer which is linked in my author bio below. You will already know the answers I am providing in this article. To be a successful internet marketer you really need a plan.

There are a few alternatives to giving up. Actually, there are thousands of alternatives to giving up and all of them have a better prospect of success than giving up. Time to re-think the strategy and expand our horizons.

We will first explore three strategies.

1. Long tail keywords. Sometimes using generic keywords such as “diet” is useful. They will give you a selection of related keywords that are often helpful. Pritkin diet. Protein diet. Diet solutions. But sometimes they are not for the reasons outlined above.

It is often possible to find other long tail keywords, ie: keywords of three or four words in length, which, although they may not have massive individual search responses, when added together in a niche, may have sufficient searches to make targeting them worthwhile. For example, “diet plans to lose weight fast” has 9,900 searches and only 483,000 webpages showing in Google. A quotient of 20.49 which is not bad. Add in some of the other keywords showing in the Google keyword tool which have comparable searches and not too many competing
webpages and you can target a nice niche where people are hungry, if you will pardon the expression, to spend.

2. Widen our niche search. Just because the world does not share your enthusiasm for information and plans on the use of matchsticks to create a mini Empire State Building, does not mean there are not other markets you may be able to create a product for, or promote a product to. The internet allows everyone to have a say in what they find interesting. So let’s have a look at some places where we can find niches to explore.

Firstly, Clickbank. Google it and when the site appears, click on Marketplace at the top.
A long list of categories will appear on the left hand side. Each one of these categories is a broad niche. Click on, for example, E-Business and E-Marketing. A whole swathe of niches within this broad niche appears, from affiliate marketing to niche marketing to video marketing and everything in between.

Clickbank shows the gravity, generally the higher the better, although Clickbank guards the algorithm jealously, how much affiliates receive per sale and whether the product has re-billing or is a one-off payment. There are hundreds of sub-niches shown on Clickbank and thousands of products within these niches to either promote as an affiliate or to use as ideas for your own product.

3. Go to Ezinearticles and at the very top of the page you will see a list of article categories. If Ezinearticles deigns a niche worthy to be represented in its article list, then you can pretty much guarantee that there is sufficient interest in that niche for an internet marketer to find an income stream.

Check out what topics the top articles are targeting within the niche. Have a look at the titles they are using. See if you can find niches you may be interested in promoting. Cross reference these niches with information products available on Clickbank. Consider whether you have anything to add to the niche in terms of new products, new information or a twist on other products.

The internet is alive with the possibilites of human curiosity and desires. Find the right niche and people will happily pay to receive your information.

In the next article I will discuss some of the common mistakes made by a beginning internet marketer without a strategic plan to follow.

Each action you take must build upon your previous actions and must be part of a plan. A house is not built by laying the first brick, it is built by having a plan to know which first brick to lay and where. To be a successful internet marketer you must have a proven plan.

Kindness is more important than wisdom.
