As online business owners we are often hit with terms like strategy and method. The real tragedy is that many business owners believe these terms are synonymous or that they are two sides to the same coin. This belief couldn’t be further from the truth. This would be like saying carpenters and hammers are the same thing. Strategy would be like architectural blue prints while method is the way you texture the dry wall, install the plumbing or prepare hardwood flooring.

Strategy is the ultimate plan for your methodology. It is the execution order based on a set of methods accepted for use in delivering your strategy to the public at large.

Why is Strategy More Important Than Methodology?

1. Strategy indicates a vision fully conceived. A great strategy means you understand your business idea so well that you’ve identified and acquired all the tools needed to build your business. This also means that you either know how to use those tools or are constantly learning the effective use of those marketing devices.

2. Strategy indicates a long-term business approach. This is the difference between a roadside tent and a storefront. One screams “Quick buck” while the other contributes to a community and holds the greatest promise of being around after the sale.

3. Strategy says you’ve invested personally. A well-formed strategy is dependent on sweat equity. No one will
pay you to spend the time to develop your strategy using multiple methods. This is why this part of online business is often overlooked. The individual has an idea and they want to execute the idea without really knowing how.

4. Strategy means fewer fire extinguishers. Many business owners discover they spend more time fixing problems they didn’t plan for than in the actual advancement of their business. They are constantly working to put ‘fires’ out. If we are to use a homebuilder analogy here it would be that in order to build a house you will need to know how to swing a hammer, how to use a screw driver and the proper times to use pliers. It’s not always enough to own the tools you will need to familiarize yourself with them and understand how to make them do what you need them to do.

Method can be an important part of strategy, but never assume they are the same thing.

Some people will correctly state that even failed business start-ups can provide experience in how to develop a new business. While this is true it can also be a very expensive lesson. Imagine a loss of $5,000 on a business because you made the mistake of viewing a method as your strategy. Sure, you’ll know better next time, but you might go back into business simply using another method instead of the strategic approach that can provide the best hope for success in business.

Choose your strategy and then find the methods that bring that strategy to life. The end result provides improved color to your entrepreneurial canvas.
