Titanium rings with anodizing

Anodizing is a process that adds color to an object made in titanium. It is a different process than what is used in aluminum anodizing, where dyes are added to an oxide layer.

Titanium is a material so strong and lightweight that it was originally used for aerospace applications. It was found to be extremely inert, so later found uses in medical implants like femurs and bone screws.

What is black zirconium?

Some rings are made from something called Black Titanium. It’s a proprietary alloy of one large company, and it’s actually an alloy of mostly zirconium with a little titanium thrown in for good measure.

Can titanium rings be cut off?

A lot of the Internet rumors started when some aerospace worker had the brilliant idea to use a titanium bearing race as a ring. He had a hard time getting it off. For use in a bearing race, by definition, the material is made as hard as possible and has sharp square corners, so that was not a very smart thing to do. The material used in titanium rings is not hardened like that and can be cut with a variety of different means.
